Density?dependent natural selection mediates harvest?induced trait changes

چکیده

Rapid life-history changes caused by size-selective harvesting are often interpreted as a response to direct harvest selection against large body size. However, similar trait may result from harvest-induced relaxation of natural for size via density-dependent selection. Here, we show evidence such favouring large-bodied individuals at high population densities, in replicated pond populations medaka fish. Harvesting, contrast, selected directly and, parallel, decreased densities. Five years were enough harvested and unharvested inherit the classically predicted differences, whereby grew slower matured earlier than medaka. We that this divergence was not driven smaller populations, but larger populations.

Semantic Informativeness Mediates the Detection of Changes in Natural Scenes

Three experiments investigated whether the semantic informativeness of a scene region (object) influences its representation between successive views. In Experiment 1, a scene and a modified version of that scene were presented in alternation, separated by a brief retention interval. A changed object was either semantically consistent with the scene (non-informative) or inconsistent (informativ...

Trait changes in a harvested population are driven by a dynamic tug-of-war between natural and harvest selection.

Selective harvest of large individuals should alter natural adaptive landscapes and drive evolution toward reduced somatic growth and increased reproductive investment. However, few studies have simultaneously considered the relative importance of artificial and natural selection in driving trait changes in wild populations. Using 50 years of individual-based data on Windermere pike (Esox luciu...

14. Multiple Trait Selection

Improvement in the efficiency and quality of animal production can be achieved by improving several characteristics simultaneously. For example, we may want to breed the ideal dairy cow that produces not only a lot of milk, but also with a high percentage of components like fat and especially protein. In addition, such high producing animals should preferably have no fertility problems, not suf...

Phylogenetic Window Analysis for Detecting Chronological Changes in Natural Selection

Natural selection operating at the amino acid sequence level can be detected by comparing the rates of synonymous (rS) and nonsynonymous (rN) substitutions for the protein-coding nucleotide sequence, where relationships rN > rS and rN < rS conventionally indicate positive and negative selection, respectively. The direction and magnitude of natural selection operating on a protein may change dur...

Effects of Marker Density, Number of Quantitative Trait Loci and Heritability of Trait on Genomic Selection Accuracy

The success of genomic selection mainly depends on the extent of linkage disequilibrium (LD) between markers and quantitative trait loci (QTL), number of QTL and heritability (h2) of the traits. The extent of LD depends on the genetic structure of the population and marker density. This study was conducted to determine the effects of marker density, level of heritability, number of QTL, and to ...
